“After completing the first session of Absolute Beginners I experienced a huge sense of achievement. I have thought about writing all of my life but found it extremely hard to put pen to paper. The structure of the course helped a great deal in actually making me sit down and start to write. To begin with I felt very self conscious about allowing others to read my writing but Emily was extremely encouraging and this single session has boosted my confidence enormously. All in all I came away from the first session walking on air!”

The course outline

Before you begin, you’ll have an introductory chat (via Skype, phone or email) with Emily to help you pinpoint your motivation and learn about what the course entails.

Then, after you have finished each of the four sessions, you’ll email two of your exercises to Emily. She’ll shower you with praise during another chat and discuss how to build on your work.

During and after the course, you can chat with other participants via a secure online forum to share ideas and thoughts.

Each session takes place within a two-week timeframe, and you’ll receive feedback on that session’s exercises before the following session begins.

Course tutor: Emily Cunningham

“I’m one of those people who instinctively edits, sub-edits and proofreads everything I see, and that includes restaurant menus and cereal boxes. I love the written word and years of experience means that I instantly ‘know’ what makes your work good and how it could be honed, tweaked and polished to perfection. So the opportunity to work with new writers is thrilling to me – I can provide constructive support and advice on your writing and it would be a pleasure too. It’s a win-win.

I have been a voracious reader all my life and love the escape and the joy that the written word has to offer, so it was a natural step to become a writer and editor myself. I began my writing career on magazines and newspapers, working for the broadest of broadsheets (The Guardian) to the frothiest of weeklies (Take a Break). I’m comfortable working in any genre, any writing style. I now combine journalism with copywriting and editing, having edited several books for The Write Factor. Devising and tutoring this course (along with The Write Factor’s Editorial Director, Lorna Howarth) is my latest venture, and I can’t wait to get cracking on your work.”

“I have thoroughly enjoyed The Write Factor’s Absolute Beginners course. It has given me the courage and motivation to write on a regular basis. It has encouraged me to ignore my inner critic, to set aside unattainable and unrealistic standards and get writing. Every word counts.”
Maeve Jones
“This course finally made me sit down and think ‘Writing!’ Then, with the positive feedback from my tutor Emily, I realised that I had the capabilty to write and be read. I am now working on a short story that I hope to enter into one of the many short story competitions that are around.”
Deborah Clark
“It really has been exactly the way into writing I’ve been looking for. The brief is both funny and inspiring and it made me enthusiastic about putting pen to paper. Having small exercises to tackle means that I haven’t felt daunted – only excited about having a go!”
Penny Carrington
