Design, The Write Factor, Book Publishers, Devon

Y our manuscript is complete – congratulations! The next step on your publishing journey is to get it designed so that it looks like a bona fide book. If your book is a novel with chapters and no images, this is a relatively easy process; if it is a manual with graphs, illustrations and bullet points, the design process is somewhat more complicated – but we will help you make the right decisions, every step of the way.

You need to think carefully about the eventual format of your book and what you want included in the design process:

  • At what size (mm) do you envisage your book?
  • Will it be paperback or hardback?
  • Does it include graphic elements? If so, who holds the copyright, or do they need to be commissioned?
  • Do you want to publish on Amazon and/or Kindle?

Print-ready PDFs for Amazon’s CreateSpace or for bulk print

These files will be created in Adobe InDesign to present your book in the best possible format for ease of reading and display of images. This service includes the front and back cover plus the spine detail (and a dust-jacket if you have selected a hardback format). The back cover blurb is supplied by the client, unless otherwise agreed. We can include your own images for the cover if you wish.

Kindle-ready .mobi files

If you want your book to appear on Kindle then we need to create separate files that are compatible with Kindle software. We do this by converting the InDesign files into .mobi files. There may be some design elements in your original PDF that will not convert well to Kindle, so some updates may be necessary. We can give you guidance on this and advise you as to what is compatible on all platforms if you wish to publish to Kindle.

Cover Design Service

If all you require is a cover for your book, then The Write Factor’s book cover design service offers you two options to choose from, depending on your budget: a standard book cover and a bespoke book cover. Our standard cover is simple, with one stock image and typography; whereas the bespoke cover will be created by our design team in more detail and can incorporate your own photographs and ideas.

We ask to see your manuscript in its entirety before we give you a quote for the provision of print-ready PDFs. These will be Amazon-spec compatible, which means you can either load your PDFs to Amazon’s CreateSpace e-pub programme and publish via that platform OR you can send the PDFs to a printer to get copies of your book produced. (We offer Amazon Upload and Print Management Services – see our Publishing page for details.)

We then ask you to fill-in a Design Feedback Form which will give us an idea of the type of book you are envisaging. Using this as a basis for a sample chapter, our design team will then look at all the elements in your manuscript that need to be incorporated into the design: titles, running headers, the Table of Contents, pagination, images, graphs, etc. We then provide you with a PDF Sample Chapter with our suggestions for fonts size and style, page size and margins, suggested layout etc.

You then have the opportunity to feedback to us on what you like or don’t like and we adjust the design accordingly. When you are happy with the design and layout, we ask you to ‘sign-off’ the sample chapter and our design team work-up the whole book based on the decisions made on the Sample Chapter.

We go through a similar process with the book cover.
