The Write Factor was founded to support writers through the publishing process. To encourage previously unpublished writers and give them a foothold on the publishing ladder, The Write Factor holds a Shortlist competition on a given subject, every year.
The Award is presented to the writer judged to have the most flair and talent. Their short story or book is then published and promoted by The Write Factor, giving the winner a platform from which to launch their writing career. Winners of previous Awards will be invited to join the judging panel for future Awards.
Details of the Shortlist for 2015 will be announced shortly.
SHORTLIST WINNER 2014
Rhian Waller’s first novel, Eithe’s Way won The Write Factor’s annual Shortlist Award, 2014. The panel of judges – including the winner of 2013’s Award, Lynn Batten, author of The 07.45 – were impressed by Waller’s sublime turns of phrase: “… his smile thickened and lengthened like a feeding leech”, and also her ability to build a palpable sense of tension and foreboding in the narrative. Waller has a precocious talent that belies her years; she writes with great wisdom and has a way with words that makes one hopeful that this is the first of many great novels.
SHORTLIST WINNER 2013
Lynn Batten’s sublime novella, The 07.45 – Tales From The Back of a Bus won The Write Factor’s Shortlist Award 2013. The stories that arise from this short bus journey show how interconnected and interdependent we all truly are: the seeds of friendship are sown, a spot of hasty social climbing unleashes a a few gift horses, and instant karma reaps its just rewards. Written as only one who uses public transport can, The 07.45 will have you chuckling with laughter in recognition of a few archetypal characters and inconsiderate old gits!
